An extensive investigation has revealed that artificially created text has infiltrated the alternative medicine title category on the e-commerce giant, with items promoting cognitive support gingko formulas, digestive aid fennel preparations, and "citrus-immune gummies".

Per scanning 558 titles released in the marketplace's alternative therapies section between January and September of the current year, investigators found that over four-fifths were likely written by AI.

"This constitutes a concerning exposure of the widespread presence of unidentified, unconfirmed, unchecked, potentially artificially generated material that has thoroughly penetrated this marketplace," wrote the investigation's primary author.

An example of the apparently AI-generated publications, Natural Healing Handbook, presently occupies the most popular spot in the marketplace's skin care, essential oil treatments and alternative therapies categories. Its introduction markets the book as "a toolkit for personal confidence", urging consumers to "focus internally" for solutions.

Suspicious Author Identity

The author is named as an unverified writer, with a marketplace listing presents her as a "thirty-five year old herbalist from the beachside location of Byron Bay" and creator of the enterprise a herbal product line. However, none of this individual, the company, or associated entities appear to have any internet existence outside of the platform listing for the publication.

Detecting Automatically Created Content

Analysis noted multiple indicators that suggest potential artificially produced alternative healing text, featuring:

  • Extensive utilization of the leaf emoji
  • Nature-themed writer identities such as Rose, Plant references, and Spice names
  • Mentions to disputed alternative healers who have endorsed unsupported remedies for significant diseases

Broader Phenomenon of Unconfirmed Artificial Text

These publications constitute a larger trend of unchecked automated text marketed on the marketplace. In recent times, amateur mushroom pickers were warned to bypass foraging books available on the site, ostensibly created by AI systems and including unreliable guidance on how to discern poisonous fungus from edible types.

Demands for Control and Marking

Business representatives have urged the marketplace to commence labeling AI-generated text. "Any book that is fully AI-generated must be marked as AI-generated and automated garbage must be removed as an urgent priority."

Responding, the company stated: "We maintain publication standards governing which titles can be listed for sale, and we have active and responsive methods that aid in discovering material that violates our guidelines, irrespective of if automatically produced or different. We commit substantial time and resources to ensure our requirements are adhered to, and take down titles that fail to comply to those guidelines."
