Radioactive Seafood Issue: Indonesia Faces Pollution in Key Industrial Zone
An extensive manufacturing complex located in the suburbs of Jakarta is addressing nuclear pollution following an official taskforce detected presence of the hazardous isotope Caesium-137 at twenty-two manufacturing plants inside the site, that encompasses companies shipping frozen seafood.
Urgent Measures and Product Recall
The finding has led to emergency decontamination efforts and the relocation of local residents, coming after a similar pollution alert in the United States that was traced back to the Indonesian plants.
An important multinational retailer is one of the companies that have recalled products from its stores following the finding.
Probe and Detection of Pollution
Indonesian officials launched an inquiry after the US Food and Drug Administration identified Caesium-137, a radioactive isotope, in a consignment of frozen coated prawns exported by a local company.
Officials released an advisory advising suppliers and retailers to discard the goods and not sell it, even though the found amount was well under the agency's intervention limit. It added that the amount of Caesium-137 it had detected would not pose an acute hazard to consumers.
The FDA stated: “The main impact on health of worry following longer term, ongoing low dose contact (for example through consumption of polluted food or water over time) is an increased chance of cancer, caused by harm to DNA within body cells.”
Widespread Pollution and Medical Checks
Radiation scans showed at least twenty-two plants in the industrial area were affected. The official taskforce did not name the 21 other manufacturing facilities, but said they would promptly undergo cleanup procedures conducted by Indonesia's nuclear authority.
The environment minister stated that residents residing in highly polluted zones would be relocated until the site was cleaned, emphasizing that the well-being of the residents was the “main concern”.
Health authorities also conducted examinations on nearby employees and residents living close to the manufacturing estate, identifying 9 individuals who showed signs for contact to Caesium-137. These individuals were referred to a hospital before being cleared to return home.
Cleanup and Containment Measures
The contaminated sites will immediately receive decontamination operations by the national atomic energy agency. Authorities have also selected the site of a recycled metal plant as an containment center for polluted goods.
Indonesia, which has no atomic energy facilities or weapons programme, suspects that Caesium-137 may have come into the country from abroad.
Origin of Pollution and Import Restrictions
An official representative told the media that scrap metal imports were the probable source of contamination and confirmed the authorities would promptly impose limits on metal waste imports. It was stated that transport were also being checked for potential contamination as they moved through the area.
Regarding Caesium-137 and Public Concerns
Caesium-137 is a hazardous nuclear isotope that typically appears in the environment as a result of nuclear testing or incidents, such as Fukushima or Chornobyl. Small amounts are found in earth, food and the atmosphere.
The amount found in the chilled shrimp was much less than regulatory action limits, but the authority stated prolonged exposure to even small amounts of caesium was associated to an higher risk of the disease.
Withdrawal Information
The recalled seafood was available at major store locations across at least a 12 US states, such as Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas and West Virginia.
