Prison Shock: The Ex-President Jair Bolsonaro Confronts Life Behind Bars

He fought the legal system and the law prevailed.

A couple of months subsequent to getting a 27-year sentence for seeking to “destroy” Brazil’s political system, former president Jair Bolsonaro now appears destined for incarceration.

Expected Imprisonment

The found-guilty instigator – who had been under residential detention in his mansion while a series of court processes and petitions proceed – is widely expected to be incarcerated in the coming days, amidst growing speculation that he will be sent to a notorious maximum security prison.

Past Comments on Inmates

Over Bolsonaro’s long political career, the right-wing ex- military man showed minimal compassion for the country's prison population.

“What’s the need to provide those scoundrels a comfortable existence?” he once mused. “They deserve to be screwed, end of story. That's my view.”

At another time, Bolsonaro proclaimed: “Should you not wish to end up there, the only thing required is not rape, abduction or rob.”

Jail Location Debate

But the idea of Bolsonaro himself ending up in the Papuda top-security prison in Brasília has shocked allies, a group of four this week toured the complex in an apparent attempt to discourage the supreme court from transferring him there.

Izalci Lucas, a senator from Bolsonaro’s Liberal party who was one of the visitors, stated he predicted the septuagenarian figure to be jailed in the following week and a half and was concerned his assigned prison could be Papuda.

He asserted Bolsonaro’s serious intestinal problems – the result of a life-threatening assault during the 2018 presidential campaign – signified it would be hazardous to keep the former president there. “His condition is extremely serious. He won’t be able to handle it if they take him to Papuda … It will be terrible,” he commented, who also worried about packed cells and the standard of inmate food.

When inspecting Papuda, Lucas noted seeing cells containing forty inmates: “That is practically one square meter per prisoner.

“We talked to the prisoners and they complain, naturally, of the horrible cuisine,” remarked the senator.

Backers Speak Out

Lucas is not the lone figure speaking out prior to the one-time head of state's anticipated detention.

Authoring in a leading publication, one more backer, the former communications minister Fábio Wajngarten, bemoaned the “harsh” end to Bolsonaro’s “spotless” political career and alleged Brazil was about to see “the biggest wrong in its past”.

“This is an injustice that erodes the spirits of millions people in Brazil,” he stated.

Mixed Popular Opinion

That may be accurate considering the considerable support Bolsonaro retains on the conservative side. Yet his expected imprisonment has also pleased the feelings of many others who think he deserves to be jailed for planning to prevent his successor from becoming president – and additionally conspiring to have him killed.

The lawmaker, a congressman for the incumbent president's Workers’ party, said: “Not a soul wants Bolsonaro to be sent in a dark cell. No one wants Bolsonaro to be placed in segregation. Not a soul wants Bolsonaro to lack food or for him to have to lie on concrete. We want him to receive respectful care – but proper treatment in prison. He must not persist being his self-appointed guard for his lifetime.”

The congressman noted how Bolsonaro supporters, who have long praising the severe treatment of convicts, had unexpectedly woken up to their rights. “Recently has the extreme right – which has repeatedly asserted that civil liberties should not be for lawbreakers – chosen to tour a prison to find out what conditions are actually like,” he said.

“The former president is a criminal,” the congressman maintained, but that did not mean he deserved “degrading, insulting treatment”.

Likely Incarceration Conditions

Regardless of rumors that Bolsonaro could be sent to Papuda, which now contains about fourteen thousand inmates, his expected location seems to be a nearby prison for officers and other “special” detainees known as Papudinha (Minor Papuda).

His potential cell are far more comfortable than those in the larger jail, although still a world away from the comfort Bolsonaro enjoyed while living in the stunning official residence, around a short distance away.

As per information, the room Bolsonaro could likely occupy in Papudinha has about 24 square meters – roughly the dimensions of a couple of car spots – and contains a 130 square foot bathroom with a shower and a 12 square meter balcony. “Bolsonaro would be allowed to have a TV and additionally a cooler in his cell as long as they were donated by his loved ones,” the report stated.

Ideological Responses

Senator Lucas criticized the rumoured plan to send the former leader to Papuda as “an act of payback” on the part of the presiding magistrate who presided over Bolsonaro’s proceedings and will decide his outcome in the {
