Additionally, Murakami's final-year pay is subject to escalators based on performance achievements in 2026:
- A seven-figure bonus for earning the Most Valuable Player award.
- $500K for placing as runner-up or in third place in MVP voting.

- An identical bonus for earning the ROY honor.
The contract provides that he will not be optioned to the farm system without his permission and grants him a unrestricted player at the termination of the contract. Additional perks include a dedicated interpreter and flight reimbursement between his home country and the States.
Compensation and Historical Context
As part of the transaction, Chicago is obligated to provide a compensation payment of roughly $6.58 million to the Swallows, Murakami's previous team in Japan's NPB. The Yakult organization are also entitled to a additional payment of fifteen percent triggered incentive payments.
Murakami joins the ranks as the fourth-ever Japanese-born to play for the White Sox, in the footsteps of reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Notably, Takatsu previously coached Murakami during their time in Japan.
Career Highlights
Murakami, a left-side batter who turns 26 soon, joins a promising group of offensive players in Chicago that includes prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The White Sox are coming off a difficult season, placing at the bottom in the American League Central but showing a notable improvement from the year before campaign.
A two-time league MVP honors in consecutive seasons, Murakami made history with a historic 2022 season where he launched 56 homers, breaking the longstanding record for a player in Japan formerly held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That performance also made him the most youthful hitter ever to achieve Japan's prestigious batting Triple Crown.
His last year was curtailed to a partial schedule due to an oblique injury. Even with striking out 64 Ks, he still managed .273 with 22 HRs and 47 RBIs.
Over his eight-season tenure with the Swallows, Murakami has posted a .270 lifetime batting average with 246 homers, 647 RBIs, and 977 strikeouts in nearly 900 games. Early in his career playing primarily at first, he has more recently played to the hot corner.
Global Stage Success
Murakami's clutch hitting were on full display during the 2023 World Baseball Classic. In the semi-final against Mexico, he hit a victory-sealing two-base hit that drove in teammates for a thrilling one-run win. The next night in the championship game against the United States, he slugged a game-tying homer in the early innings, paving the way for Japan's 3-2 title triumph.
The power hitter is slated to be unveiled at a introductory event on the coming Monday.
