Three police officers were killed and no fewer than 15 others sustained injuries in what appears to be premeditated gas explosion at a rural property in northern Italy.

Sequence of Events

The detonation occurred as law enforcement and fire personnel went into the property in the vicinity of the Verona region to enforce an removal notice for a brother and sister trio in their late 50s and mid-60s.

The three victims who died belonged to the Italian military police.

Investigation Developments

One male and one female got detained at the scene and one more individual who escaped following the blast was found soon after. Each of them have been admitted to medical facility.

The explosion could be audible some 5km (3 miles) away and photographs from the scene revealed the property reduced to a pile of rubble.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” said Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who added that previous tries had been made to evict the three siblings in the earlier times.

Financial Context

The president of the region of Veneto, the regional head, stated the residence was facing an removal notice due to unpaid amounts incurred by the three owners.

Negotiators had been sent to talk with the siblings who had locked themselves into the house. When the police reached the location soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials suspect one of the siblings set off the detonation.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” provincial police commander the police commander told news outlets.

“A gas cylinder had been set off, and the blast immediately struck our officers,” he added.

Incendiary devices were also discovered at the property, the interior minister said.

Injuries and Destruction

The wounded by the blast comprised an additional 11 personnel of the military police as well as three members of Italy's state police and a firefighter.

As stated by the prosecuting attorney, the property was in a dilapidated shape and had lacked electrical service.

He believed the detonation had taken place on a story above the access point and stated to the press it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Just prior to the incident, he revealed officers had “noticed a hissing sound, probably the gas canisters being turned on”.

Neighbor Statements

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” local residents told Italian media, noting that the three had in the past stated to “cause an explosion” rather than leave the house.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

Minister of Defence Guido Crosetto stood alongside other elected representatives in commemorating the three men who had been killed in the line of duty.
